WING WEDNESDAY! 🤓Let’s nerd out. Now that you’ve met one of our molecular biologists, let’s get into what exactly they do from a scientific perspective. Microalgae are too small to detect with the naked eye... so then how are we able to work with them so closely?! Today, we start at the very beginning - at the first pillar of The WINGTM Platform: Molecular Foundry. Within Molecular Foundry, there is a process called Molecular Biology. The goal of molecular biology is to establish the DNA sequence in microalgae that will ultimately express what we want it to do. 🧬 Step 1: We begin by modeling the organism out on the computer. Yes, it looks complex but it’s extremely important to how The WINGTM Platform works. 🧪 Step 2: It enables us to work on the genome of our microalgae. What is a genome you may ask? Think of it as a library of genes. By modeling different species of microalgae, we are able to create a fully sequenced microalgae genome! 🦠 Step 3: This is a great source of information to us. We can look for specific genes identified in other organisms and identify the sequence of these genes in our microalgae, which ultimately allows us to optimize the genes that will produce the most efficient oil production. Stay tuned next week to meet the fermentation team! #WINGwednesday #thebutterflyeffect #biomanufacturing #innovation
