Described as one of the ‘best main road villages in the Cotswolds,’ Barnsley grew up at the crossroads of two important trade routes; the Cirencester – Oxford road and the old London – Gloucester road, also known as the Welsh Way, as it was used by Welsh drovers.⠀ ⠀ 🏡 The village seems to be the by-product of the re-routing of the Cirencester – Oxford road in 1753. In 1675 the road probably ran to the east of Barnsley House. It makes sense if you wander down this now quiet lane.
