Repost from @vpam_arts • In 2018, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors apologized to more than 200 mothers of Mexican descent who were forcefully sterilized at the Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center between 1968-1974. To publicly express this apology, the LA County Department of Arts and Culture (@lacountyarts) commissioned artist Phung Huynh (@phungxion) to create a permanent outdoor sculpture honoring the resilience of the survivors – to remember the histories of women whose narratives have been historically repressed. The name of the artwork is Sobrevivir, which means to survive, to keep alive. As part of the project, Huynh led public workshops to create a series of patchwork quilts, to engage with this on a personal and collective level. The examples pictured here are both designed by Gloria Molina, former LA County Supervisor & CA Assemblywoman. Learn more about these artworks and the public art project in our newest exhibition Phung Huynh: Sobrevivir, which opens Saturday, September 17th at 6pm. Phung Huynh: Sobrevivir Opening Reception Saturday, September 17th 6:00pm - 8:00pm Face masks are highly recommended and event registration is not required. #PhungHuynh #Sobrevivir #VPAM #ELAC #exhibitionopening Image captions: Comisión Femenil patches from the Sobrevivir Community Quilt series, designed by Gloria Molina, 2021.
