Many individuals have been wondering if there is any association between COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy and the prevention of COVID-19 infection in babies once born. For #MedicalMonday we’re reviewing a recent article published in JAMA by Carlsen et al. which explores the association between COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy and incidence of COVID-19 infection in infants.
Bottom line? Infants born to mothers who received COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy had a lower incidence of COVID-19 infection during both the delta and omicron waves.
This nationwide cohort study conducted in Norway included all live-born infants in Norway from September 1st, 2021 to February 28, 2022. Vaccination status of the mothers was reported through the Norwegian Immunization Register, while COVID-19 infection was recorded by positive PCR test results reported to the Norwegian Surveillance System for Communicable Disease.
Rates of COVID-19 in infants were reported based on the vaccination status of the mother, and the predominant strain of COVID-19. Overall, there was a greater reduction in infant risk of infection during the delta wave than the omicron wave, and in infants born to vaccinated mothers as compared to unvaccinated mothers.
Overall, this study provides early evidence that infants may develop some passive protection against COVID-19 infection following maternal COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy.
