The history of the American National Guard traces back to before the United States declared its independence. Since the Guard’s origins as an effort to organize existing militias in the Massachusetts Bay Colony into three formal regiments, our National Guard has been a force in readiness brought to bear throughout our nation’s history. Today, the US National Guard consists of approximately 450,000 American men and women in all 50 states and four US territories. Whether it’s providing units for global conflict, providing relief during natural disasters, or sending special operations forces to assist in border security, the Guard is a vital resource.
