THIS WEEK'S WORKSHOP: (re)Learning to Read: Close Reading as Methodology for Revision
This workshop focuses on close reading—an analytical strategy used in literature—as a tool to write and revise poems. Participants will learn first how to analyze the form and function of a poem. First in small groups, then as a large discussion, attendees will look at an example poem to analyze form and function and identify intentionality with the work. Then, they will learn how to apply those skills to their own drafts in order to make more intentional craft decisions, with an opportunity to share revisions or findings at the end.
*Note: This workshop is an editing workshop, so students should come with a draft of a poem ready to be revised.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Jennifer Nicole has a PhD in English and over 12 years of teaching experience. She is also a spoken word poet who has been part of the Write About Now Poetry community since 2015. All of her teaching from the last six years has centered around teaching students close reading. Her expertise in this area has heavily influenced how she writes and revises her own poetry, and it has equipped her with the tools and opportunity to edit several other poets’ manuscripts. Her poetry and her academic writing mutually inform each other as she attempts to break the critical/creative binary in both spaces. Her academic work has been published in top journals in her field, and her poetry has been featured on Write About Now and A+.
