Herbert Matter captured this image of the mobile Blizzard in Calder’s Roxbury studio in 1947. Calder’s wife, Louisa, gifted the work to the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (@whitneymuseum), in 1977. A major retrospective had been on view at the museum when the artist died the year before. Jean-Paul Sartre wrote of Calder’s mobiles, “These hesitations and resumptions, gropings and fumblings, sudden decisions and, most especially, marvellous swan-like nobility make Calder’s mobiles strange creatures, mid-way between matter and life.” Image: Blizzard (1946), Roxbury studio, 1947.
