If time didn’t chain you, what would you do to feel free? This was our central inquiry for 🛸 (Don’t) Use Me: Wadi Rum 🛸 our collaboration with @autumnbreon for the Wadi Rum Experience 2022. (Don’t) Use Me – created by Autumn Breon – is an iterative examination of the relationship between freedom and time, specifically through the lens of the Black woman’s body. For the Wadi Rum iteration, @autumnbreon and I spoke with women from the National Center for Culture and Arts and the Al Hussein Refugee Community Center – ranging from 18-60 years old, whose backgrounds span from artist to refugee – to expand this examination to Jordan. Some of the responses we received: 💭I would study astronomy and become an astronaut 💭I would go back and finish highschool 💭I would let time and expectations melt away and not count my life in minutes, hours, days or tasks completed but in the magnitude of joy I feel living with no chains. 💭I would do...nothing. We wrote down every dream we heard, and incorporated them into the piece that @autumnbreon performed in the Desert itself. We invited the women who were with us in the Desert to speak each dream out loud and into existence. And in an effort to keep the spirit of these dreams alive beyond the Desert, images of the performance will be sold as prints via NFTs, with a percentage of the wealth going to these women – who had the audacity to imagine what freedom looks like without the chains of time. There is simply too much to say about this collaboration for one social media post. There is simply too much to say about how magnificent it is to co-create with @autumnbreon, a true visionary from the future.
