“Sexy Beasts” by Virginia San Fratello (@vasfsf ) The Sexy Beasts are co-botic vessels that demonstrate how robot and woman can work together to exploit the opportunities and limitations that occur when 3D printing with clay. The vessels are 3D printed out of a local clay body called Red Velvet from Northern California, where the artist is located, and a white stoneware that is dyed either Rose, Blush, or Salmon. Each vase is a balayage of color and shades from the organic and earthy red at the bottom to the more synthetically colored pink at the top. The robot 3D prints the digital design of the vase and the artist interacts with each piece by cutting the strands of clay into a shag and then blow drys them after they are printed to modify the outcome. In this way, each beast is completely unique, designed by both robot and woman, working together.
