Our beautiful old neighborhood was almost flattened into a highway! 😰 In 1972, determined and defiant neighbors formed a non-profit to stop the demolition. They successfully saved what is now the largest intact 19th century neighborhood in North Carolina. We’re listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Thanks to those neighbors, we’re a thriving, tight-knit, walkable, leafy community today— that’s hard to find when so many cities in the south have sprawled into cookie-cutter suburbs with massive lots.
