Some updates on Mr. Bentley. We had a teleconsult with the radiation oncologist at Medvet on the 26th and then spoke with her again this week. Both the neurologist and her feel the tumor is actually an incidental finding and not related to his teeth grinding/pawing at the mouth behavior. So we are still trying to help him there but haven't had luck so far. As far as the tumor goes, it is actually small (4mm right now) and while the 6 months to a year that the neurologist gave us on the 19th is the "typical" timeframe for a cat brain tumor, the radiation oncologist shared that this tumor is super rare in cats so no one truly knows the progression of how fast they grow. She also consulted with other radiation oncologists in the country, all who said the same thing.
Yesterday we had a visit with OSU's Radiation Oncology department, as it never hurts to get someone else's thoughts and we also wanted to see if stereotactic radiation (SRT, which they do there) is an option if we need to do treatment down the road for his brain tumor. The vet there overall said the same thing as Medvet...there is no way to know true prognosis and that radiation is an option, though she would recommend regular radiation treatments vs. the SRT. She also had similar recommendations in regard to doing a repeat MRI scan in a couple months (unless we see neurological changes sooner) and then if we see a lot of growth, plan for radiation. So that's our current gameplan.
It stinks that there are many unknowns right now but I'm at least feeling a bit more hopeful that maybe, just maybe the tumor will grow really slow and hopefully we will have him around longer than we thought.
Right now, we just have to figure out how to help him with the episodes as the zonisamide didn't work and he is still having frequent attacks while eating and grooming. I have an email out to the neurologist on next steps yet on if we should trial another medication. I also scheduled an acupuncture vet to come to our house late next week to see if maybe acupuncture and laser therapy will help. It is worth a shot.
All in all, I ask that you continue to have Bentley in your prayers and keep the good vibes coming. 💙
