Y̓e ws keʔ sxwesit, “Walk in a good way. Let your journey be good.” The text in this poster translates from the native language of faculty member Kathleen Sleboda's Nlaka’pamux ancestors into English.
Created by Sleboda as a commission for @metaopenarts in honor of Native American Heritage Month, the work uses traditional Native American Nlaka’pamux and Salish visual motifs and turns them into a landscape of digital symbols that represent the interconnectivity of all things and people. The traditional baskets and weavings produced by Nlaka’pamux women in Sleboda's family served as inspiration. The final set of assets were produced as a 10ft. wall mural at Meta and series of posters.
nłeʔkepmxcin, the first language of Sleboda's grandmother and her family, is highly endangered. Her band, the Coldwater, have done incredible work creating language revitalization tools and programs.
Recently Sleboda and her partner, Christopher Sleboda, also a Critic at RISD, participated #Ezhishin, the first conference on Native North American Typography, organized by the @typedirectors.
