It’s the end of the breeding season for Purple Martins here in Texas and the last nest at Este Garden finished last weekend. It was a very sad end to a rough season, with a whole nest of five jumping out prematurely, we were only able to save one, maybe two thanks to @austinwildliferescue . We had around 100 eggs laid among 21 pairs, with about 75 hatching, but only 50ish successfully fledging. We had about twice the amount of deaths as last year. It was just too hot for too long too soon. But with climate change, this will be the new normal, so hopefully the pairs that mated later, will mate earlier next year. Nature is super metal. The Purple Martins in the area are currently visiting their pre-migratory roost every evening at Capital Plaza, and it is quite the sight to behold. One of the most incredible displays in the natural world, so large you can see it on radar. Kevin and I will be volunteering with the Travis Audubon every Saturday for the next three Saturdays so come chat with us about PuMas. The roost really gets going around 8:30 pm.
