Halki is a small beautiful and rugged island situated in the Aegean Sea between Turkey and Greece it is part of a 150 smaller and larger islands that make up the Dodecanese. Father Savas closes the church and looks out onto sea, At his ordinary day’s end I see the whole of the Byzantine world carried in his face, past this wall are the waters of the Aegean, the soft bubbling break of boats as fishermen enter the harbour.
