FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Request for Proposals – Archaeological Services
As part of the Skipwith-Roper Homecoming, The JXN Project endeavors to reconstruct the Skipwith-Roper Cottage as a national landmark as part of America250 in 2026. The Maggie Walker Community Land Trust, the City of Richmond’s official land bank, donated 10 parcels of land to serve as the reconstruction site – bounded by East Bates Street, North 3rd Street, and East Preston Street. JXN’s primary research has helped to uncover that several Jackson Wardians, such as Abraham Peyton Skipwith, were buried at their homes and therefore, in an effort to be good stewards of the donated land, and given its close proximity to the Shockoe Hill Burying Ground Historic District, the project will conduct an archaeological investigation of the site, to include a public engagement component, before initiating reconstruction. Unfortunately, there are limited current requirements for archaeological investigations in historically Black andor Indigenous communities, but JXN hopes that the Skipwith-Roper Homecoming can emerge as a promising practice in preservation within sacred spaces like Jackson Ward.
JXN is requesting proposals for archeological services from qualified professionals to conduct geophysical survey and systematic subsurface investigations of 10 contiguous parcels totaling approximately 0.269 acres in Jackson Ward. The period of performance is November 1 through December 31, 2022. The ideal candidate will consist of a diverse team of registered professional archaeologists with at least 10 years of expertise and experience in conducting archaeological investigations in urban settings within communities of color. To apply, please send an email titled "RFP for Archaeological Services" with your full proposal to [email protected] by Monday, September 12, 2022. #thejxnproject
