“Genipapo” / The traditional art of body painting is passed down from Kayapo women to their daughters, granddaughters, and nieces, although everyone in the community is painted. The paint itself is a mixture of a fleshy fruit known as genipapo and charcoal, which oxidizes and becomes a semi-permanent ink. The women trace intricate, geometric webs across their family members using fine sticks, feathers, and their fingers, often pulling their children onto their laps for hours at a time to complete the process. The patterned motifs have many meanings depending on both the design and the person wearing them, weaving every member of the tribe into the very fabric of their village’s culture and instilling a powerful sense of belonging. / Click the link in my bio to enquire about this limited edition print and learn more about my and @PaulNicklen’s upcoming exhibition “Evolve,” launching on October 1st at Hilton Asmus Contemporary in Chicago. @hilton.asmus.contemporary
