Most of America has forgotten about the “Black Square” -- you know, the entertainment industry’s show of social media support for the black community in June of 2020 -- but I have not. Every now and then, in the midst of a deep timeline scroll, it happens. A black square with the accompanying hashtag, “BlackoutTuesday” glares back at me; a reminder of an opportunity to meaningfully change the industry... gone unfulfilled. Until now. After a year of self tapes, auditions, virtual callbacks, and filming, I decided that if Hollywood isn’t going to address the issues women of color in the entertainment industry face on a consistent basis, I’ll do it myself. Premiering June 1st, the one year anniversary of Blackout Tuesday, “Black Square” is a weekly Instagram Live discussion that will provide a space for myself and guests to share the stories we usually have in private, on a public level. Tune in today at 5pm PST/ 8pm EST as I take over the @thecut’s Instagram Live with actress @auroraperrineau to discuss everything from casting directors, microaggressions on set, hair and makeup inequities, the audition process, performative activism, pop culture and more!
