Another question for photography educators:
What are you afraid of if you were to use fat/plus size models in your workshops/shoot outs?
That there would be a lack of styling option? That it wouldn't be as much of a draw for attendees? Lack of knowledge as to how your methods apply to all bodies? You own body image insecurities/feelings about bodies coming to the surface?
---------------------------------------------
This question might be triggering and ignite some defensiveness as I call your methods into question. But if you are unable to show folks how to adapt your methods to accommodate multiple bodies is it really something that is helpful?
Or maybe the thought of photographing larger bodies in front of an audience brings up the same fear we see from folks in Facebook groups when they post things like "I have someone a size 18 coming in - what do I dooooo?" Perhaps you aren't as confident in your methods/techniques as you might think.
At the educator level, whatever you are teaching (lighting, posing, styling, etc.) Should be easily taught regardless of the subject sitting in front of you. If your methods are good enough to teach, you should be able to put in whatever body size/shape and base your selection more on performance than body size/shape.
So, if you think/teach that your methods CAN be applied across the board - are you showing this in your workshops/shoot outs?
If not, why?
