I often get asked what my favorite whiskey is. And I always answer that it's a loaded question. So much of the enjoyment of a beverage comes from the environment, the people you're sharing it with, and the mood of the person drinking it. The experience of the drink is often so much more impactful than the actual liquid in the glass. With that in mind I've never found it helpful to tell people that my favorite whiskey is a one off single barrel that I personally picked out years ago. While it may be true what they're actually looking for is something of quality that they can find almost anywhere. That's probably why I find myself recommending the Four Roses Single Barrel so often. The standard single barrel is always Four Roses recipe OBSV. This means a mashbill of 60% Corn, 35% Rye, and 5% Malted Barley. It is then fermented with one of five proprietary yeast strains, V, which lends a fruitiness to the final liquid. Bottled at 100 Proof this high rye whiskey is fruity, powerful, spicy, yet surprisingly delicate. It works equally well in a cocktail or for straight sipping. Combined with the price point and the fact that while available it isn't yet "standard issue" is probably why you find me sipping on it as often as I do.
