Story time— it was October 5, 2016, I was Student Body President, and Kamala Harris was preparing in my office at Cal State LA for the first California Senate debate. As she walked through the door, warmth filled the room. We talked a bit, and laughed, as I told her my “Auntie” @deziewj , (Former Vice Mayor of Oakland✊🏾), told me to tell her good luck and she has this in the bag! “Your Auntie Dezie was one of the first people to really rally behind me,” she said with such gratitude. I watched her closely, with admiration/inspiration—she felt so familiar to me. As she began to focus, I could tell she was nervous—not because she wasn’t confident in her abilities, but because she knew this was just the beginning to her living out her wildest dreams. I wished her luck, as we parted ways and went home that night trying to figure out AGAIN, what was it about her that felt so familiar........it finally hit me. Vice President Kamala Harris is a reflection of me, you, and so many Black/Brown womxn on the path to living out our wildest dreams. With the strength of the ones before us, the ones who support us (like Auntie Dezi) and so on. Like her ...or not, 4 years ago she was running for senate, now she’s in one of the highest offices of our nation. WE control OUR DESTINY, and we CAN and WILL do whatever WE WANT! CONGRATS @vp
