Trailblazing Movie Star Dorothy Dandridge’s birthday was yesterday (November 9, 1922) but we are celebrating it today with an homage from another trailblazing beauty, Winnie Harlow @winnieharlow (Winnie is putting the “Super” back into Supermodel). Dorothy was the first African American nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her sensational performance in the titular role of 1954’s Blockbuster “Carmen Jones” (Director Otto Preminger had initially rejected Dandridge for the role, deeming her too ladylike and proper to embody the earthy femme fatale Carmen — she proved him wrong, spectacularly). Dorothy was also the first Black Woman on the cover of LIFE Magazine (swipe left to see it lovingly recreated by Winnie). But unjustly, Dorothy was never afforded the smallest fraction of opportunities offered to the other 1954 Best Actress nominees (Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Judy Garland, and Jane Wyman) though she was every bit as talented, if not more so. As she herself succinctly put it: “While experiencing what seemed to be a full acceptance, I encountered not-yetness”. Nevertheless Dandridge lives on as an Icon, forever one of Hollywood’s Greatest Stars — thank you for paying tribute to her Winnie, and letting us help!
