Chhayaankan The Management of Shadows A film by Hemant Chaturvedi As a Cinematographer for most of my adult life, (I was the Director of Photography on films like Company, Makdee, Maqbool, Kurbaan etc.) I always felt that the stalwarts of my profession rarely got the recognition they deserved. When I chose to leave my profession in 2015, after 30 years as a Cinematographer, I decided to meet the 14 cinematographers I had approached in 1990/1991/1992 to work with, but who had been unable to include me in their teams. Just to understand their journeys as creative professionals, and to try an understand the universal ethics and aesthetics and morality that are quickly vanishing from our profession, but were steadfast in that generation of professionals. This documentary is a series of interviews with these 14 cinematographers, on a variety of our profession-related subjects and issues, that we have all questioned at some point in our creative journeys. It is also the first documentary of its kind, and almost everyone in this film has never ever been interviewed before, with the depth and honesty you will experience when you watch the film. It is a heartfelt tribute to all my peers and an expression of gratitude for their incredible innovations and achievements in our field of work. Without whom we would not be the people that we are today.
