When I started my choreography/movement direction work, I really enjoyed the fact that behind the camera or off stage, my race, how I look or my age didn’t matter. As a POC dancer though, I have experienced the nature of unfairness of getting performance gigs in this highly competitive industry. The settings can be very skewed. I’m sure other BIPOC dancers have similar experiences.
Creating movements that speak to me was a huge liberation and made me a better performer. I feel blessed for being able to do what I do.
After 10 plus years of doing this, I realized that the visibility of BIPOC in not only our industry but anywhere else is very important.
We are not invisible. We are strong and we have stories too.
Happy AAPI month everyone! I’m always so happy to see other AAPI artists thriving wether in dance or not ❤️😊
