Montreal is home to the colossal Trois disques, commissioned by the International Nickel Company for the 1967 International and Universal Exposition. In addition to being one of Calder’s tallest stabiles, Trois disques is rare as an unpainted stainless steel outdoor sculpture. “They wanted it bare,” Calder explained, “which was natural because the Nickel Company put up the money, so they wanted it to look like nickel. It took almost a year to make because they had to install new machines to cut the stainless steel. All the metal it was made from came from Canada.”
