Jiang Cheng's first institutional presentation explores psychology in portraiture. Jiang's beautiful, haunting works focus on the expressive powers of the human face. In works like "e-106" (2021), Cheng thinks through how we identify a figure as gendered, or "Western." The deadpan expression of the subject results in a hallucinatory and obscure image. Jiang Cheng (b.1985, Quzhou, China) lives and works in Shanghai. He created "e-106" and many of his other paintings in single sessions, without correcting or covering any of his gestures. "Jiang Cheng" is on view in ICA Miami’s Ray Ellen and Allan Yarkin gallery located on the first floor of the museum through May 7, 2023.
