Representation in media is important to #Hearst Originals Associate Video Producer Valis Vicenty (@valsvanity), both in her personal life and in her work. Valis is no stranger to using her position to feature Latinx talent, both on screen and behind the camera. From seeing herself in the iconic biopic “Selena” to creating change at Hearst, read more about Valis below, and share your #YoSoy story to join the conversation. “#YoSoy una passionate writer, producer, pop culture fan girl y puertorriqueña. I’m lucky to be on a team that welcomes my weird self and allows me to use my position to highlight and include Latinx talent. The Hearst LatinX ERG (@hearstlainx) provides a space where I can share different aspects of our cultures, connect and develop friendships with colleagues from other divisions and discover new ways to collaborate. Is it too cliché to say the first time I saw myself in media was watching 'Selena'? As a 'no sabo' kid —individuals who aren’t fluent in Spanish — the iconic 'muy excited' line from the film struck me when I first saw it in theaters. I was amazed to discover others who faced the same language barrier as well as the feeling of not being Latinx enough, let alone someone as famous and influential as her. Growing up, it was hard for me to get into a lot of the Spanish-language media my family enjoyed since I was never a fluent speaker and often felt out of the loop. But I’m trying to work on my Spanish now.” #HispanicHeritageMonth #HearstRISE
