“I think one of the really challenging fields for the new generation of sculptors is this question of how to use the new technology and the new mediums not to mutilate nature, but to create a new nature—that is to say a man-made nature but one which is equivalent to the qualities that we associate with nature's: that is, space and quiet and the aesthetic pleasures of being in such an environment.” – Isamu Noguchi
While not technically an architect, Isamu Noguchi had a total appreciation for the myriad interconnections that compose a space. Like Mathias Goeritz, Juan O’Gorman, Javier Senosiain, and Carlos Lazo, the artist-architects featured in the new exhibition ‘In Praise of Caves,’ many of Isamu Noguchi’s sculptures and spatial designs arise from the elements, forces, and inhabitants of subterranean environments—stone, water, gravity, caves, snakes, and our prehistoric ancestors. For all these artists, returning to the earth signifies a necessary and joyous cohabitation with nature.
