“S” is for Stijl. "De Stij" was an art movement originally founded by Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg in Leiden (Netherlands) in 1917. It included architects, visual artists, poets and designers. The aim of De Stijl was an elementary renewal of architecture, painting, sculpture, design, typography and poetry. Through strict non-figurative art, they sought to revitalise the canvas surface in a radical reduction of colour and form as well as in a geometric order of horizontal and vertical elements. Mondrian's De Stijl compositions of lines and planes in red, yellow and blue and the non-colours black, grey and white, have become world-famous and continue to inspire artists, architects and designers to this day.
