A couple of weeks ago as we stepped out the door to go on a morning walk, a Red-tailed Hawk dropped a dead squirrel right in front of us. When we looked up we saw that there were two of them at the very top of a Post Oak, probably about 40 feet up. Red-tailed Hawks mate for life and during courtship will occasionally pass prey to their mate mid-air, although this time unsuccessfully. You know when you watch a movie or a commercial with a Bald Eagle and they have this majestic scream that echoes and is so quintessentially raptor-like? That's a Red-tailed Hawk. The Bald Eagles' call sounds more like a squeaky toy or horse whinny and, well, not quite as impressive as the hawk's call. We see one of the hawks about once a day, so they may have a nest nearby and hopefully come summertime we'll see the juveniles around as well.
