Since the summer of 2018, and on a greater scale since MPD murdered George Floyd in 2020, Reclaim the Block has tried to move toward a Minneapolis that doesn’t rely on the police for the illusion of safety they provide with their powers of violence and criminalization. We’ve put forward the abolitionist vision of a world built on care, transformation of harms, and the meeting of needs. We’ve done this through our budget work, our political education, our work to redistribute money with accountability, our organizing with partners and other groups around the city - especially Black Visions. And indeed, we’ve worked toward that vision with our attempt to remove some of the roadblocks to this world that exist in the charter with the Yes On Question 2 campaign. While we’re saddened that these roadblocks still remain, we are grateful to each person in Minneapolis who supported us, organized with us, came out to vote with us; to each organization who was part of the Yes4Minneapolis coalition, and to all the organizers around the country whose work has inspired and shaped ours. This work is not finished; our vision is powerful, hope is a discipline, and we know that we are not alone as we look towards the next stages of our work together.
