Today is the 2nd budget hearing. Sign the petition (link in bio) and join Reclaim the Block, the Yes 4 Minneapolis Coalition, and Color of Change to demand that city council rejects a $27 MILLION funding increase for MPD. After tens of thousands of Minneapolis residents voted for a new approach to safety, Mayor Frey promised police accountability and reform. Yet his proposed 2022 budget INCREASES MPD's budget by almost 20% — and doesn’t fully fund the Office of Violence Prevention. Sign up to participate in the budget hearing on Dec. 1 at 6:00 PM CT. Here's how: 1. Go to bit.ly/MplsBudget. 2. Scroll down until you see "Public Hearing Signup Form." 3. Pick "City Council" from the drop-down menu that says “meeting type” 4. Pick "December 1- 6:05 p.m.- City Council” from the drop-down menu “Council Meetings” 5. Pick “2022 City Budget” from the drop-down menu “December 1 public hearing agenda items” 6. Add your information. Use the phone number that you’ll use to call into the meeting. 7. Use the name you want them to call you. You must have an email address. You don't have to put in a business or an address. 8. Click "submit" We know this is a different situation than our previous budget campaigns. Even though Mayor Frey and MPD may feel emboldened, we can still use this time to show that better is possible and tell the council to move towards that. — 1. Fund care, not cops — No $27 million increase for MPD! 2. Fully fund the Office of Violence Prevention (OVP) 3. Fund essential services like school-based clinics, family and early childhood programs, and youth programs! Throwing more money at MPD is NOT the answer — and more money to fund violent policing does NOT keep us safe.
