Gary Burton - “Chega De Saudade (No More Blues)” I had the honor of joining vibraphonist Gary Burton’s touring band some years before he chose to retire from performing He is certainly an innovator on his instrument (i.e. the Gary Burton mallet grip) and he paved the way for touring jazz musicians all over the world While working with him, he gave me truly valuable lessons about comping, soloing, conducting yourself on stage, and life on the road. Plus much about being an ethical and considerate musician I’m grateful that he is still among us, but I miss his playing I was always fascinated with this 70’s (?) rendition of this A.C. Jobim song, he plays it so fast, and so accurately. An incredible rhythmic momentum It’s really instructive to try to match his 8th notes, as it is very much on top of the beat, and when I play along, it rewards to play an 8th note before the downbeat, even if he plays the downbeat himself I eat it several times, yet it’s quite fun :) PS he published an autobiography some years ago called “Learning To Listen”.
