The Tequesta (also Tekesta, Tegesta, Chequesta, Vizcaynos) tribe was a small, peaceful Native tribe. The Tequesta tribe were the original inhabitants of present day Miami. They hunted and gathered their food just like many other tribes. Depended mainly on fish, shellfish, nuts, and berries for food. The men caught sharks, sailfish, sea cows, and porpoises in the Biscayne Bay and the Miami River. There was never enough food so the tribe never became larger. The Tequesta tribe used shells and shark teeth for tools. During the 1500s Europeans began arriving in Florida. In 1763 Britain occupied Florida. Many of the tribe were sent to Cuba or joined another nearby tribe. The Tequesta tribe numbered about 800 people, but they started to die out because of slavery, battles, and diseases. By the 1800s, the Tequesta Indians became endangered with only a few people left. The number 63 was chosen for this jersey to honor the last year the tribe occupied Miami
