What do obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, fatty liver disease, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, neurological disorders, and premature death have in common? All can be stoked by high uric acid levels. Uric acid levels can be the root of many pervasive health conditions We still largely think uric acid only has to do with gout, and that the way to manage it is with medication (allopurinol). False - there are simple strategies of what to do lower uric acid levels, starting with the easiest one: getting rid of ALL the liquid fructose in your diet (soda, juice, sweetened beverages). Fructose converts to uric acid in the body, which hurts the mitochondria and makes us store fat instead of burning energy properly. "Fructose” is glucose evil twin. Why? Because fructose leads to uric acid production which damages our mitochondria. When this happens, instead of producing energy properly, we shunt energy substrates to fat. This fat damages our liver cells and causes insulin resistance. 5 ways excess uric acid negatively impacts our health: 1. Causes mitochondrial dysfunction, leading to insulin resistance, leading to inflammation. 2. Reduces nitric oxide function, causing blood vessel damage and blood flow issues, all of which further incites inflammation. Blood flow issues are a big problem for the brain and body! This inflammation can also cause issues with expression of insulin gene and hurt pancreatic cells. 4. Causes leptin resistance, meaning it negatively impacts our hunger satiety signals. 5. Uric acid can promote decay of intestinal lining, and change the microbiome to a more inflammatory profile, all contributing to intestinal permeability (leaky gut). The optimal levels for uric acid (hint: less than 5.5 mg/dL!) If you are not within this range, start by checking your insulin levels, and watch out your diet including fructose, purine rich foods and umami foods, dehydration, alcohol, and more. #legabarit #uricacid #insulinresistance #dubai #lebanon #abidjan #healthyfood
