Daisugi (台杉) is a Japanese technique developed in the 14th century for sustainable forestry that produces timber without cutting down trees. Cedar trees are pruned heavily to produce "shoots" that become perfectly uniform, straight and completely knot free. The shoots are carefully and gently pruned by hand every two years leaving only the top boughs, allowing them to grow straight. Daisugi cedar can be harvested every 20 years, with the base tree lasting hundreds of years, maintaining the ecosystem - which saves the forestry industry as well as the planet.
