As a parent, you're constantly saying "give your sister a turn." But what if there was a way to equip kids with the tools they need to solve problems on their own?
Remember that sharing is a developmental milestone and toddlers will learn to share, typically closer to 3.5 years of age.
But in the meantime, when you find yourself in a situation where your toddler refuses to share, there are a few things you can do:
✔️PAUSE and think about what you're going to say.
✔️NARRATE what's happening in a neutral tone of voice. For example, you might say "Molly is reading a book. Jack grabbed it from her."
✔️OK the feelings: This will help your toddler feel seen and understood and help them be receptive for the next step).
✔️TEACH mediation skills. Even at a young age, toddlers can learn how to resolve conflict more peacefully. By teaching these skills, you'll be setting your child up for success in the future.
“You both want to play with the same toy.”
“How do you think you can solve that problem?”
Sit back and let your kids figure out a solution.
They can learn mediation skills, even at a very young age.
💟 TIP: you may need to give a little input initially.
🤸♂️When I was in medical school, I used acronyms to remember details when I was too stressed to think straight. I recommend using the acronym E.A.S.Y. to help you tame those tantrums without losing your cool. I’ve created a FREE audio lesson to share this approach. LINK IN BIO.
