I remember Assia being so proud when she met president Gorbachev. Despite the very mixed feelings about him and the demise of the Soviet Union back home, he was an incredible statesman and diplomat. Toward the end of his life he considered Putins invasion of Ukraine to be a betrayal of the Russian people and the progress that had been made over the many years since the drawing of the iron curtain.
