The light is always reaching for you... Will you reach back? I was a pretty melancholic young man as I was growing up. I didn’t really have much reason for allowing myself to slip into those pensive states of sadness. Maybe it just felt good to be little sad sometimes. But really, I was a melancholic that wished he was sanguine. I still have similar swings into that somber headspace. I hear the saying all the time that, “Happiness is a choice.” And I actually do believe that sentiment. But what I don’t believe is that happiness is a light switch that you can turn on and off. If you spend enough time in the dark, the light can be overwhelming and harsh on the senses. The healthy choice comes when you decide to take action steps towards the light. Going from one to the other requires adjustment and transition. Sometimes you have to realize you’re in the shadows to find the cracks wherein which the light shines. I love people that are happy, I love being around happy people, and I love being happy myself. But even standing in the sun casts a shadow. Life is that beautiful tight rope walk of dealing with the push and pull of light and darkness. They’re both reaching for you.
