Installed Geoff Thornley’s “Measure of...” in the Paddington space this morning. Seldom do we encounter work that achieves this level of civility and poise. When so much work is shouty and gratuitous - so look, look at me!!! Geoff Thornley’s paintings almost turn away. At first sight they appear almost reticent about their allure, evasive and modest about their charms and yet sit with them patiently and they elicit a sensuality that is quiet and felt. These are tender paintings and seem so at odds with the demonstrative theatre that vies for attention. Even more they are welcome antidotes to the adolescent acrimony of our times.
