Over here at Reclaim the Block, we’ve been busy but quiet for a lot of this year, and we wanted to share some updates about what we’ve been doing, and where we’re going.
First, let’s talk about money: In 2020 Reclaim the Block received $11.2 million in donations after the MPD murder of George Floyd and during the uprising. We committed to redistributing 75% of the $11.2 million (totalling $8.4 million) while dedicating the rest towards staff and operating. To date, we have redistributed $7.3 million. That money has gone to organizations around the Twin Cities to advance safety and organize towards abolition with their communities, to the Transformative Black Led Movement Fund via Nexus, and to immediate mutual aid to Black folks and organizers who were boots-on-the-ground during the uprising of 2020. Separate from our redistribution efforts, $375,000 from Reclaim the Block’s general operating fund went to the Yes 4 Minneapolis campaign.
We are working on a process to send out another $1 million by winter 2023/24. An additional $200,000 will go to the community around George Floyd Square, through a participatory budget process – we’ll train a team of youth in community-led budgeting, and they’ll make decisions collectively about how to spend that money summer 2023.
