#RecentAcquisition ✨ Shannon Cartier Lucy's "Woman in Reflecting Light," (2021) highlights the artist's ability to create intimate work that teeters between uncomfortable and beautiful. The painting depicts a woman with her face eerily close to the surface of a bed, creating subtle tension between the painting and the viewer. Lucy (b.1977, Nashville, Tennessee) uses her life experiences to connect with her art and evoke an emotional response from the viewer. Growing up with a parent with schizophrenia shaped Lucy's view of the world. It allowed her to see a new language in which to channel her creativity, resulting in strange and absurd yet poetic and relatable pieces. By obscuring the faces and expressions of the subjects in her painting it creates a situation where the viewer is invited into the work more personally, but also could easily have the viewer wanting out of the experience. "The images I paint are strange, violent, and unsettling, but at the same time beautiful, inviting and intriguing" - Shannon Cartier Lucy, 2019 💭What impression does "Woman in Reflecting Light" have on you? ——— (1) Shannon Cartier Lucy, "Woman in Reflecting Light," (2021).
