Mark Francis’s paintings convince me that I should’ve passed physics... or chemistry for that matter... actually I did... by the slimmest of margins. But Art History was always gonna prevail.
I look at the paintings Mark makes, and they seem to be bursting with knowledge and research. They’re not pompous paintings that demand to be decoded, so that you “get them” and can then feel smug. Rather these are paintings that test unnamed theories, and use unpredictable materials in his London laboratory - all this experimentation in the name of intelligence, beauty and sensory gratification.
They seem to be offering us elastic experiences about visual fission/fusion (physics - can’t avoid it) whilst simultaneously making us aware of the sonic patterns that envelop us, giving shape and structure to our sensate world.
We are VERY excited to be bringing new works of Mark’s to both Australia and New Zealand - to Sydney Contemporary and to Auckland for the exhibition “Plastic Soul” where these new works will be presented alongside major paintings by Imi Knoebel, Erin Lawlor, Hanns Kunitzberger, Koen Delaere, Gunter Umberg & Todd Hunter. #foxjensenmccrory #foxjensengallery #markfrancis #markfrancisartist #painter #sonicdub #blitzkriegpop
