I have people that ask me all too frequently why I get so enthralled with the desert. I actually kind of like being asked about it because it gives me an excuse to give my feelings reason and put them into words.
I grew up in the southeast; lush, muggy, flat, swampy Georgia. We had our woods, creeks, hills, fields, and lakes. It had it’s own idyllic charm. But there was no place where you could go to stand at the edge of a lookout and stare out into an endless landscape.
No canyons, cliffs, dunes, or anything to provide you any kind of profound vantage point. But the west has proven itself to be a treasure trove of such wonders.
It does something special to you being able to look out and see just how far the horizon can go. It’s inspiring and even humbling in some ways. It reminds you of how much expansive opportunity there is and gives you a sense of power by allowing you to stand above it all.
I’m kind of glad I never developed a fear of heights, because standing on the edge of a cliff and absorbing the sights and sounds is one of my favorite thrills.
That’s just one of countless reason why I’m so enthralled with the desert... shall I give you more?
