On June 28, 1969 the first #Pride began at The Stonewall Inn in New York City. Led by trans and non-binary people of color, the Stonewall riots took place in response to targeted violence from police officers toward the LGBTQ+ community. As police stormed and violated spaces deemed safe for members of the LGBTQ+ community, people began to fight back and demand better treatment for marginalized communities. Now, over 50 years later, we continue to honor the legacy of movement leaders such as Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson. Without them, we would not be where we are today. Although there is still a long way to go toward liberation for all, we are committed to this work and will stop at nothing to see it through. Image description: A neon red sign that says, “The Stonewall Inn” sits in the window of the location where the Stonewall Uprisings began over 50 years ago. The bottom half of the building is made of red brick, and the top half is white stucco. There are arches on both sides of the window with the sign in it, and there are three windows with small balconies on the building’s second floor. On each balcony, there are pride flags blowing in the wind.
