You’re never the same person, it’s never the same road. There’s a quote from a Greek philosopher by the name of Heraclitus “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” In plain English, it’s just to say that everything is always changing. A river is alive, constantly flowing and never stagnant. A man is constantly altered by the experiences that shape him. Everything flows and nothing stays. According to Heraclitus, change is inevitable. We either accept it and adapt to it or we get left behind. The same can absolutely be said for the roads upon which we traverse. New adventures, opportunities, people, and stories flow across all roads both familiar and unfamiliar. A couple of years ago and just less than a few weeks after learning how to ride a motorcycle, I was on this winding mountain road feeling like I was defying death and tempting fate. Since then, I’d like to think that I’ve become a better rider, a little less fearful, and a little bolder. I think the road shows me that, if even just a little bit, some form of progress is taking hold. I’ll always come back to this road because it proves to me that change, as terrifying as it can be, is beautiful. I’m no longer tempting fate, I’m meeting it somewhere beyond the edge of who I was. And I’m bringing friends with me.
