We’ve received many messages on PPG about the epidural shortage. Epidurals are one of the most popular choices for pain management in labor. However, in some areas in Canada, due to disruptions in Global supply chains, there has been a shortage of epidural catheters and tubes which are used to transmit medication for pain management during labor and delivery and in some surgeries. We know you are concerned with these headlines, BUT many hospitals have worked quickly to find a suitable alternative for the epidural catheter and tubing. At many hospitals there is currently no change to the usual care for those in labour and delivery and epidurals ARE available to those in labour. Best thing to do is to check with your maternity care provider and local hospital on their current situation. It is also a good idea to review additional pain management strategies that are great options in addition to epidurals. Hopefully this will be sorted out in the areas/hospitals impacted as soon as possible and in the meantime we will continue to update as we know more.
