On April 17, 1871, the Common Council for the City of Richmond established a gerrymandered sixth ward, also known as Jackson Ward. Historically, this political district spanned from 18th Street to Leigh Street along the northern neck of the city. Despite its oppressive origins, the nation’s very first officially registered historic Black urban neighborhood would become synonymous with enterprise and excellence — soon becoming a blueprint as the “Birthplace of Black Entrepreneurship”. As we broach the ward’s sesquicentennial celebration on April 17, 2021, we celebrate the shoulders on who we all stand. Dear Jackson Ward, Happy 150th Anniversary and cheers to many more — we can’t wait to toast to you on tomorrow as we embark on a JXN Journey across your historic and historical footprint as the sun sets in the sixth ward!
