2 (SHORT) STORIES & A TAKEAWAY •
-
1) The slides above explain it, but recently a segment in a podcast I did on fertility was called out because I made a math error. We corrected it in the caption on all platforms and will re-insert the audio on Apple and Spotify as we always do (alas, YouTube doesn’t allow segment re-insertion). These are not protocol related but nonetheless we take them seriously, hence the corrections.

Having given 1000s of hours of classroom lectures I am familiar with the occasional chuckles or callouts when something is misstated. There it’s also appreciated— to be clear, it’s not fun, but definitely appreciated given the spirit of teaching and learning.

2) A close friend (truly, not “I have a friend”) still tells the story of volunteering to go to the front of a 6th grade class to answer a question and they wrote out the wrong answer and the class laughed. They recall basically deciding at that moment to never stick their neck out there again. This is a real tragedy in my eyes.

Takeaway: we absolutely need to strive to do our best and to be careful when we communicate especially when teaching, and we should invite, not avoid constructive criticism; it makes us all better. In fact, @biolayne has called me out several times, each time we talked, I learned and we now enjoy friendly but still rigorous discourse to try to get at the truth of various topics.

My advice is that if you’re a creator of any kind, a teacher, or simply want to share things in life and online that you invite critique, stand your ground as appropriate but don’t let any of the so-called hate or dunking draw you off course from why you’re there. Stay the course, integrate the objective critique and strive to do better. This is essentially the scientific method but it applies to everything. Hope to see you and your unique contributions out there online and in the world!
