MAC joined Chicago City Council Members, healthcare providers, and other abortion care advocates at City Hall yesterday morning for the exciting announcement of Chicago’s Bodily Autonomy Sanctuary City Ordinance. Recognizing that the destruction of Roe v Wade is in tandem with queer and transphobic attacks by law makers, this municipal package provides civil and criminal protections for those traveling to Chicago for safe abortion and gender affirming care, as well as their providers and community support systems. We see the surrounding concentrated and relentless attempts to strip our autonomy and deem us property of the states we reside in. Cities and states that will be destinations for people seeking abortion care all over the country will need to ensure bodily autonomy is truly protected from the economic and physical threats of legislators and their supporters who believe in forcing people to give birth against their wishes. MAC is hopeful that patient-centering and supportive ordinances like this are modeled throughout the country, and more of the places we call home stand up for safe, legally protected, and funded abortion access. Those pictured and who spoke include: MAC's Marie Khan, Alderpersons Rossana Rodríguez (33rd), Carlos Ramírez- Rosa (35th), Matt Martin (47th), Maria Hadden (49th) and Chitra Panjabi of CAF Board, Dr. Amy Whitaker Chief Medical Officer of Planned Parenthood of Illinois, Mike Ziri of Equality Illinois, and Kristen Perez of the Illinois Nurses Association and their legislative chair.
