I initially posted my credit score on my IG story this morning. Since the responses have flooded my DMs, I made it a grid post. I'm sharing this as a reminder for people to pay close attention to your credit scores and what's on your credit report. When I was in my 20s, my credit was terrible. I had no knowledge on how credit worked.
I can recall the first time I abused my credit privileges. It was around Christmas time back in the early 90’s. Back then I wasn’t getting that many shows at the time, and money was tight. I wanted to buy gifts for my family. I opened a few credit cards and charged the gifts to the accounts. I fell victim to the holiday pressure that most people deal with. Terrible decision. I had no funds to repay the debt and ended up ruining my credit.
After that, It became difficult to get an apartment, a car, hell... to even apply for another credit card. Nearly a decade after the damage was done, I took the necessary steps to better my life. No quick fixes. I decided to write letters to creditors and worked out deals with them. I agreed to repay the debt and they agreed to have all negative info removed from my reports. I slowly repaid the outstanding debt. It took around two to three years but it was worth it.
My scores have been high for nearly two decades now. I take pride in becoming financially literate and to be quite honest, it’s a daily practice. I talk to my kids about it. I engage with my friends and fam about it. It's important! My plan is to create financial literacy seminars in every city that we have CQ events. Each one teach one. The goal is to have financial freedom.
